Top-Down and Bottom-Up Interactions between Low-Level Reactive Control and Symbolic Rule Learning in Embodied Agents

چکیده
Mammals bootstrap their cognitive structures through embodied interaction with the world. This raises the question: how the reactive control of initial behavior is recurrently coupled to the high-level symbolic representations they give rise to? We investigate this question in the framework of the "Distributed Adaptive Control" (DAC) cognitive architecture, where we study top-down and bottomup interactions between low-level reactive control and symbolic rule learning in embodied agents. Reactive behaviors are modeled using a neural allostatic controller, whereas high-level behaviors are modeled using a biologically-grounded memory network reflecting the role of the prefrontal cortex. The interaction of these modules in a closed-loop fashion suggests how symbolic representations might have been shaped from low-level behaviors and recruited for behavior optimization.

The Effect of Bottom-up/Top- down Techniques on Lower vs. Upper -Intermediate EFL Learners’ Listening Comprehension
Listening is regarded as an interactive process involving decoding of information. This study was launched to find out the impact of bottom-up (BU) and top-down (TD) techniques on Iranian lower and upper intermediate learners’ listening comprehension. We selected a total of 120 participants in six intact classes, three lower intermediate and three upper intermediate. The proficiency level of th...
متن کاملSkill Learning Using A Bottom-Up Hybrid Model
This paper presents a skill learning model Clarion. Diierent from existing models of mostly high-level skill learning that use a top-down approach (that is, turning declarative knowledge into procedural knowledge), we adopt a bottom-up approach toward low-level skill learning, where procedural knowledge develops rst and declarative knowledge develops from it. Clarion which follows this approach...
متن کاملEvent-Related Potentials of Bottom-Up and Top-Down Processing of Emotional Faces
Introduction: Emotional stimulus is processed automatically in a bottom-up way or can be processed voluntarily in a top-down way. Imaging studies have indicated that bottom-up and top-down processing are mediated through different neural systems. However, temporal differentiation of top-down versus bottom-up processing of facial emotional expressions has remained to be clarified. The present st...

This paper presents a skill learning model CLARION. Different from existing models of mostly high-level skill learning that use a top-down approach (that is, turning declarative knowledge into procedural knowledge through practice), we adopt a bottom-up approach toward low-level skill learning, where procedural knowledge develops first and declarative knowledge develops later. Our model is form...
متن کاملEffect of Metacognitive Strategy Training and Perfectionism on Listening Comprehension Sub-Processes
The present study aimed to examine any possible relevance of perfectionism as a personal trait variable, in moderating the effectiveness of meta-cognitive instruction on bottom-up and top-down sub-processes of listening comprehension with a sample of EFL learners in Iranian context. To this end, 94 female EFL learners were selected from among 136 EFL learners at Andisheh Language Institute in M...
